Christmas Dream

We spend most of the year blocking out the cries of the poor and suffering. In Hamas, Ukraine, and Sub Saharan Africa. In our oceans and lakes. In our atmosphere and feedlots. In much of the United States.

Maybe we read some news stories. Or doom scroll headlines and pictures on social media. Or spend an afternoon volunteering somewhere. Or write a check.

But mostly we do nothing.

We purchase clutter and experiences and little luxuries. We ask our children for their wish lists. And buy gift cards for our co-workers or employees or bosses. And pack year-end parties and events to an already busy schedule.

Never once thinking about Christmas. Not really.

Throughout the year, we don’t remember what it used to feel like on Christmas Eve. When we were younger. After the service - quick hugs and blessings as people quietly head to their cars for the dark peaceful drive home, music playing, stomachs and hearts warm. Or that brief feeling the next morning. Those few hours when our hearts were larger. When the web of humanity was palpable. When our spirits were right at the surface, even radiating a little beyond our skin. When we felt more alive and open and part of something important.

Something bigger than receiving gifts. Bigger than decor. Bigger than our immediate family. Bigger than a long weekend.

As we draw closer to Christmas, let us begin to notice others. Listen, see, feel, give, help, thank, hug and dream.

Like a cloistered monk in continuous prayer, let Christmas be our holy heartbeat. Even as Advent leads us to a new life- a new way of thinking- a new way of loving. One that is open and inclusive and forgiving. Non-craving and peaceful in the impermanence of our lives. And start now.

As Pope Francis repeats over and over, “Everything is connected- no one is saved alone.”

Christ have mercy.

God have mercy.

Holy One, despite it all you are still coming and you are still here. Help us to quiet our minds long enough to feel you. Amen
