Love Builds Up

We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up.

-1 Corinthians 8:1

A patient comes in for a second opinion. Or a last chance. Or they have been putting this appointment off due to fear or embarrassment. They are apprehensive, suspicious, broken or have low expectations. Angry or crying. Arms flailing and voice raised or a confusing whisper. Or no voice at all, a driver or caregiver or armed guard or granddaughter in the room, equally uncomfortable or on edge.

Finding common ground we begin working towards a plan. Putting ourselves in each other’s shoes we find empathy. An upcoming birthday, an address near a favorite coffee shop, a fitness tracker, a bright shirt, an interesting job, even a shoulder brace or a swollen leg. Poor sleep or high blood sugar. Caring for a spouse with dementia, the loss of a daughter. There is always something to talk about, some way to create connection. We all want the same things.

I watch eyes and body language. Listening with my ears and heart. Trying to understand what is needed. The hidden questions behind the words.

One step at a time is a phrase that I use often.

And life is long, with plenty of time to try again.

And you’re going to be ok.

And we’re going to start treating this today.

And I’m going to take care of you.

And let’s not worry about what came before, I’m glad you’re here, today.

Love is the frame that God gives our lives. It’s the way we connect with one another. And it’s the way in which we stay connected. There is no greater gift than the opportunity to care for another person. It’s what we are here for. It’s why we exercise, sleep and eat well. We build ourselves up, so that we can build up each other.

Love builds up.

Holy One, keep me strong so that I can use your creative love to build up others. Amen.
