Life on the Outside
So I really like photography. It slows me down and helps me see things I'd otherwise pass over. I'm taking an on-line photography course, and one assignment was to go "on location" to capture images that tell a personal story. I chose the Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden.
Green Bean Casserole
In addition to our favorite Thanksgiving recipes, this year each of our sons contributed something new and amazing to the meal. Luke, our baker, made giant flaky dinner rolls, Eli made vegan Bailey’s Irish Cream and pumpkin cookies, and Jordan created a green bean casserole that is too good not to share.

Autumn
I can’t remember summer anymore. And I can’t imagine its return. Blazing, humid heat. Lush green trees. Peaches. I’m spending a lot of time researching sunlamps and the best brands of vitamin D. I bought a new jacket, unscrewed hoses, and changed air filters. Costco had huge boxes of gloves at the front entrance. I’m sure I have gloves somewhere but I put a pair in the cart just in case.
Keeping Perspective
It should have been a great day, but it wasn’t. I was visiting my son, Evan, and my future daughter-in-law, Beth, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I got to see their new house; we went to a great concert; and on a lark, we decided to see our beloved Oklahoma Sooners play the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. What a great idea: Evan and I hadn’t been to an OU game together in years. It would be Beth’s first OU football game.

Soaked In
It had been three years. A lifetime and a flash. Most of the faces at the hospital and the hotel were the same but not all. Some had moved on, replaced by others. Some had died. The stories were sad and familiar. Lost love, difficult times. In the short days I was present, I soaked it all in.

How Long Do We Carry It?
When I heard the news, it instantly brought back a flood of childhood memories. But all of the sudden, things weren’t as simple as they had always been. The things that happen when we’re young, good and bad, stay with us forever.

The Monarch Project
On July 21, 2022, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature placed the migratory monarch butterfly on its Red List of threatened species and classified it as endangered. The main factors affecting the Monarch’s decline include habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use. Providing a more suitable habitat for Monarchs in more places can help them tolerate these stresses.

Every Ending A Beginning
Path to Peace began on Sunday, January 1, 2012, a few days before my first overseas medical mission trip. It was a weekly two-sided insert with several components. There were weekly lectionary readings, a moment of peace, two prayers, joys, concerns, birthdays and anniversaries. Eventually they were distributed Sunday nights by email as well. The format stayed the same for over ten years.
I Understand Now
As my father grew older, he would talk from time to time about how he wasn’t meant to be a parent and wasn’t very good at it. He thought that I would do a much better job than he did.
Of course, I disagreed with his self-criticism, and was overwhelmed by his seemingly misguided faith in me as a relatively young parent.

Endings and Beginnings…or Beginnings and Endings?
The irony was not lost on my oldest son, Evan, or me.
He recently called with the exciting news that he was buying his first home with his fiancé near Fort Worth, Texas. Next spring, he will be married, and it warms my heart with pride the excitement and happiness in his voice.

Tomorrow is Today
One of my favorite go-to’s in dealing with challenging obstacles is marking time and hunkering down through deal making.
